In tandem with the Millennium Development Goals, particularly Goal 1, thereof, which has the goal of poverty alleviation through Microcredit, the Rivers State Government vide the Rivers State Microfinance Agency Law No. 6 established the Rivers State Microfinance Agency in 2008 to provide basic financial requirements to under –privileged Rivers indigenes who are involved in legitimate micro, small and medium scale activities in both urban and rural areas .

The mission of the Agency is “to build a network of strong, well regulated and effective microfinance institutions in Rivers State that will stimulate economic and social prosperity through the delivery of holistic and relevant microfinance solutions to micro entrepreneurs.
The scope of our operations is geared towards ensuring that micro entrepreneurs of Rivers State origin with businesses domiciled in Rivers State are availed a pool, wherefrom they can access credit facilities.
RIMA is presently operating the wholesale method which is akin to the globally acclaimed GRAMEEN model. This model which involves RIMA disbursing wholesale Microfinance fund to its partnering Microfinance Banks,
